This offseason, Tennessee lost several wide receivers. Dont’e Thornton and Bru McCoy both submitted their NFL draft declarations, and Squirrel White went through the transfer portal. This offseason, there are a lot of opportunities available, and there will be a lot of eyes on the wide receiver room.
One former five-star recruit from the 2024 class is Mike Matthews. Although he didn’t see the pitch much during his rookie season, he had some promise. ESPN has him classified as a possible breakout player this season since he is expected to have a significant boost in usage. Chris Low said the following regarding Matthews:
“Matthews came in as a five-star receiver last season as a freshman but didn’t provide much production for a Tennessee offence that was lacking in explosive plays,” Low stated. “He was someone the Vols really need to develop and provide them some firepower in the passing game. He briefly considered transferring after the season but ultimately chose to return. During the previous season, Matthews caught seven catches for 90 yards and two scores. He has the makings of a big-play player, and since Tennessee lost seven of its receivers from the previous campaign, Matthews has an opportunity to live up to expectations.
Matthews caught seven passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns the previous season. The 2025 college football season will probably see a significant increase in those numbers.
