Despite winning 14 WTA 1000 titles, the WTA Finals, and all four Grand Slam titles, Sharapova never truly found success in Miami.
Despite making it to the tournament’s final five times, the former world No. 1 lost each time, beginning in 2005 when she lost to fellow legend Kim Clijsters 6-3, 7-5.
After losing to her countrywoman Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4, 6-3 in 2006, she went on to lose three straight finals from 2011 to 2013.
Sharapova lost to Serena Williams 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 in 2013, after losing to Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-4 in 2011 and Agnieszka Radwanska 7-5, 6-4 in 2012.
In 2014, she advanced to the semifinals but lost to Williams once more.
Capriati, Jennifer
Similar to fellow former No. 1 Sharapova, Capriati advanced to several Miami Open finals but was never able to win the championship.
In 2001, the American star lost her maiden final after losing to her countrywoman Venus Williams 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4) in an exciting finals match.
After losing to Serena 7-5, 7-6(4) in the 2002 final, Capriati lost in the final for the third consecutive year in 2003 after falling to the 23-time Grand Slam champion 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
In 1992, the American reached the semi-finals at the age of 15, but lost in straight sets to eventual champion Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.
