Donald Trump launched an unprovoked attack in the Middle East last night, making him the third Republican president to do so in forty years.
Trump referred to it as a “spectacular military success,” but entangling America in yet another catastrophic conflict is not remarkable.
His assault on Iran is a bad plan for the following 15 reasons:
- The U.S. mainland is not threatened by Iran: Iran is not a threat to American territory, despite decades of divisive rhetoric. The nation lacks any significant ability to project military force beyond of its immediate territory and has never launched a direct attack on the United States or invaded an American ally.
Indeed, the United States has terrorised the area for decades by overthrowing democratically elected leaders, supporting cruel dictators, starting wars, and carrying out secret assassinations to obtain oil and power. Only then have Iran’s proxies targeted American forces.
Iran’s navy is mostly made up of outdated submarines and coastal patrol vessels, and its military budget is lower than South Korea’s.
The notion that this poses an existential danger to the biggest military power in the world is merely propaganda meant to incite support for war. - This conflict is based on false information: Iran is not seeking to develop a nuclear weapon. Iran has no operational nuclear weapons program and is not now actively pursuing a bomb, according to numerous confirmations from the International Atomic Energy Agency and U.S. intelligence.
As a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran has the legal right to enrich uranium for civilian uses under international law.
Israel, on the other hand, manages to avoid such scrutiny while having nuclear weapons and rejecting international control. This graphic shows which nations possess nuclear weapons and in what quantities.
