Mark Pope, the head coach of the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team, has formally addressed the departure of Jalen Mitchell, a sophomore standout, ending weeks of conjecture about the player’s future with the team.

Pope revealed that Mitchell will be using the transfer portal during a press conference held at Rupp Arena on Thursday. He cited a “mutual decision” that he feels is “best for both sides.”

Pope remarked, “Jalen is a wonderful young man with an amazing talent.” We’ve had open discussions regarding his responsibilities, objectives, and areas in which he believes he can develop the most. In the end, this concerns his growth, and I wholeheartedly endorse his choice to pursue new prospects.

Mitchell was regarded as one of Kentucky’s most potential underclassmen, averaging 14.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in the previous campaign. Many fans are surprised by his choice to transfer, particularly after a great SEC Tournament finish.

According to program insiders, Gonzaga, Michigan State, and Arizona are among the elite schools showing interest in Mitchell.

“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I’m following my heart and doing what I believe is best for my future—on and off the court,” Mitchell wrote in a social media message expressing gratitude to the Kentucky coaching staff, teammates, and supporters.

Pope and his staff will now focus on the transfer portal and incoming freshmen as they rebuild a team with championship hopes when Mitchell leaves.
