With Jeremiah Smith and a few more outstanding talents, the Ohio State Buckeyes are poised to produce even more wide receivers in the future.
However, for the time being, we can only concentrate on Ohio State receivers who are now in the NFL, like Chris Olave of the New Orleans Saints.
Due to the Saints’ quasi-rebuilding efforts and Olave’s availability for a contract extension, Olave has been the focus of trade rumours this summer.
The Saints have been rejecting trade proposals, signalling that they want to keep the 24-year-old, but New Orleans may want to move him in order to avoid giving him a big long-term contract.
According to Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report, Olave is one of several wide outs who are expected to sign extensions this offseason and might receive a sizable salary.
“[Garrett] Wilson, Olave, Atlanta Falcons wideout Drake London and Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams are among the young receivers from the 2022 class who could get new deals this offseason,” Knox stated. “Their respective teams could race to extend them too, given the next-man-up nature of contracts—whoever signs last is quite likely to be paid the most.”
The catch with Olave is that he only participated in eight games the previous season because of several concussions, and he has already suffered five concussions overall since joining the Buckeyes. That’s a lot and might make Olave’s position at the negotiation table a little risky.
But when healthy, the Ohio State product has shown himself to be a formidable force, starting his career with consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns in 2022 and 2023. In the upcoming months, we’ll see if the Saints choose to give him the big dollars.
