Leading commentators and former players have pushed the Parramatta Eels to make a spectacular move for Brisbane Broncos dynamo Payne Haas in a daring turn of events that has shocked the NRL community. The calls coincide with mounting rumours that the Eels will be overhauling their roster in 2026. Both fans and insiders think Parramatta should try to sign Haas, as the player’s contract is about to expire.

Haas, who is perhaps the league’s most formidable front-rower, has a deal with the Broncos through the end of 2026. However, as of November 1, 2025, he will be permitted to negotiate with competing clubs in accordance with NRL regulations. The Eels are under pressure to re-energise their forward pack, and past players have urged Parramatta to “go all in” as that date approaches.

“A Turning Point for the Eels”
Former Origin prop and current pundit Mark Geyer didn’t mince words when he spoke on NRL 360:

“Parramatta needs to sign someone like Payne Haas if they hope to turn things around and fight for the championship once more. He is a front-row player who comes along only once. The kitchen sink need to be thrown at him.

Former Eels captain Nathan Hindmarsh supported Geyer’s remarks, claiming that Haas will “instantly transform the culture and standard” at the team.

He is the kind of player who wilfully alters games. Dominance through the middle is what the Eels lack. Picture Haas with Junior Paulo. It would rank among the comp’s most formidable packs.

The Eels: Why?
Since their 2022 Grand Final participation, the Eels have battled with consistency, and it is thought that they are looking to add well-known players. Concerns regarding the club’s capacity to compete with the NRL’s top players have only grown as a result of injuries and recent suspensions, notably as those imposed on Will Penisini and Ryley Smith.

With Haas’ young halves and outside backs shown promise but lacking a dominant engine room platform, their addition would provide Parramatta a strong foundation for a new era.

Is He Affordable for Them?
Any offer from the Eels would have to meet or surpass Haas’ reported $1.2 million season salary at Brisbane. Since several senior contracts expire at the end of 2025, the club should have a lot of wage cap room available in the upcoming year.

According to insiders, Parramatta could easily make a five million dollar offer for four years, which would entice the 24-year-old forward provided the team can also clearly articulate its goal of contending for trophies.

The Broncos’ Reaction
Officials in Brisbane have downplayed the conversation thus far. This week, coach Kevin Walters stated:

“Payne is a Bronco.” He is essential to our future. We are already in negotiations to give him more time.

The NRL world will be eagerly watching, but the Eels have time to get ready as the deadline in November 2025 draws near.

Last Word
Although it is unclear if Parramatta would follow through on the demands to pursue Haas, it is certain that snagging him would be the kind of declaration that may alter their course. Furthermore, in the NRL, daring actions frequently distinguish competitors from imitators.
