Double Suspension Blow: Ryley Smith and Will Penisini Cop Bans in an Expensive Win Rocked the Eels
After Sunday night’s thrilling 36–20 victory over the Gold Coast Titans at CommBank Stadium, star centre Will Penisini and young hooker Ryley Smith were both given suspensions, severely hurting the Parramatta Eels’ chances of making the finals.
Penisini and Smith were given three-match bans and two-game suspensions, respectively, by the NRL’s Match Review Committee on Monday morning for two different events that occurred in the final moments of the Eels’ valiant triumph.
If Penisini fights the charge, he might be banned for four games.
Will Penisini’s lifting tackle on Titans forward Beau Fermor in the 77th minute dealt the biggest punch, sending the 21-year-old centre to the sin bin. The NRL has offered a three-game penalty with an early guilty plea because the tackle was judged dangerous enough to justify prompt judicial action.
If Penisini chooses to challenge the charge and is unsuccessful, he will be banned for up to four games, which, depending on the Eels’ position, would effectively keep him out of the rest of the regular season.
Given that Penisini is one of Parramatta’s most dependable backline offensive and defensive options, the ban is a huge blow to the team. As the Eels try to push their way into the top eight, his absence will be a noticeable gap.
Smith also retreated following a risky encounter.
Hooker Ryley Smith was given a two-match suspension and a citation for a separate violent tackle, further compounding Parramatta’s problems. The 22-year-old, who has been a promising member of the Eels’ rotation, is currently out of commission during a crucial stretch of games.
For coach Jason Ryles, who must now rearrange his spine while striking a balance between youth and experience, Smith’s increasing presence in the middle third has been viewed as crucial.
Issues with Discipline Increase in Emergency Situations
The Eels’ triumph now feels bittersweet, even as they celebrated the final score over the Titans. Their campaign may have suffered a serious blow due to their lack of on-field discipline in the closing minutes of the game, with hopes of making the finals hanging in the balance.
The simultaneous loss of two important players, especially for preventable acts, has raised questions about Parramatta’s poise under duress among supporters and analysts.
