Badminton Scoring Explained: 21 Points, Deuce, and the New 3×15 Rules

Badminton scoring is the friendliest of the racquet sports — because it’s rally scoring, which means a point goes to whoever wins the rally. No “only the server scores” rule like pickleball or tennis. If you’ve ever been confused keeping score in pick-up games, this is the article that fixes it.

Why deuce exists in badminton

At 20-all (sometimes written 20-20 or “20-all”), the game doesn’t end at 21. You need to open a 2-point lead — 22-20, 23-21, 24-22, all the way up. This is why you’ll see games crawl to 26-24 in a tight club match.

The 30-point cap nobody explains

If a game somehow reaches 29-all without a 2-point lead, the deuce rule stops. The next point wins the game at 30-29. This cap exists so a game can’t run forever — important in badminton because lunging rallies at the professional level are brutal on the body.

Best of three games

You don’t play one game and call it a day. A match is 2 out of 3 games. It ends 2-0 if the same side takes the first two, or 2-1 if the winner drops one. Between games, you change ends, and in a deciding third game you change ends again when the leading side first reaches 11 points.

The new 3×15 rules (January 2027)

This is the change almost nobody is talking about yet, and it’s the single most undercovered topic in badminton right now.

From January 2027, the BWF (badminton’s world body) is making games of 15 points the standard:

• Games to 15 instead of 21.
• Deuce starts at 14-all (win by 2).
• Hard cap drops from 30 to 21 (21-20 wins).
• The mid-game interval moves from 11 to 8.

The 3×21 format stays as an approved alternate, so your local club might not change overnight — but official tournaments will. If you’re learning the sport in 2027, check what your club plays before you assume “to 15” is strange.

What the scoreboard actually tells you

Unlike pickleball, badminton doesn’t use a three-number score. It’s just your score vs their score, plus which game you’re on (Game 1, 2, or 3). The only positional rule is the serve: right service court when your score is even, left when it’s odd — for whichever side is serving.
